The Facts

This is no regular tour; it is a rally (non-competitive). This is for adventurers only. If you want a ho-hum tour where everything is a given, then this is not for you.

The rally starts January 14th 2006 and finishes in Phnom Penh on January 25th (12 days); however, some riders may choose to stop on day 5 and fly back to Phnom Penh (if arranged prior to the start of the rally). For the rest of the riders you may choose to stop on day 9 when we arrive in Siem Reap or continue on for the full 12 days .

Should you choose to stop on day 9 you have several options. If you arrange with us in advance you can fly out of Siem Reap international airport, saving you the trouble of returning to Phnom Penh and then flying out . You can hang around Siem Reap for a few days, checking out the world famous temples of Angkor wat, then ride back the easy, 5-hour tarmac road trip back to Phnom Penh whenever you feel like it.

This is a easy trip and hard to lose your way as there really is only 1 road and you only have to make two turns and they are signposted. If you choose to fly out, let us know in advance and we can have your luggage shipped up to siem reap and will arrange transport for the bike to be returned back to Phnom Penh ( there is a $50 fee for transporting the bike back to PP ).

Pricing

5 day plan ( must be arranged in advance, no exceptions )

IN addition insurance is not included in the prices above and is optional. Insurance prices are shown in the FAQ section down below.

A non refundable deposit of $500usd is required by the 30th November

All Riders must arrive In Phnom Penh Cambodia No later than 5.00pm on 13th January 2006

The route / Schedule

Should nobody take up the 5 day riding option, days 4 & 5 may become riding days and the rally will really, up the pace and the challenge. Should a group of riders choose not to ride these extra two days of testing riding then you are free to stick to the schedule as listed below and have a extra day of rest then take the easy two hour road to Stung TReng and meet up with us on the afternoon of day 5. In the case of a emergency or bad wether Tour routes can change at the discretion of Angkor Dirt Bike Tours

You will be met at Phnom Penh Airport by either myself or one of our representees Transport to your hotel will be providedeet and greet, completion of all paper work and rally payments to be followed by lunch or dinner.

Depending on the date and time of your arrival and your preference you can collect your bike at anytime from 7.00am till 7.00pm from the day you arrive. In regards to the bikes its a case of first in best dressed.

Please let me know what day you would like to collect your bike. If you arrive in Phnom Penh well before the 13th, we will organise a few day out rides to either the shooting range, water skiing ,jet skiing, massages, etc, and of course there will be riders diners every night before we head out on the town.

Unless otherwise requested all riders will be booked into the Flamingos hotel. This is a great little hotel right in the middle of all the action and right next door to the motorbike shop. Cost is around $20 for clean, modern rooms with air-con, hot showers, sat TV, room service and a fridge. You can visit their website at www.flamingos.com.kh for more info. O

n the night before the rally there will be a riders meeting at 7pm on the roof of the Flamingos hotel followed by dinner .

Day 1

Early Breakfast. Depart Phnom Penh 7.30 am. This will be a long day, however, 80% of it will be on good tar roads and it will be the last tarmac we will see till around day 7 or day 9. First drink stop will be 45kms out from Phnom Penh. Next refuel / Drink stop will be 75km out from Phnom Penh.Should you feel hungry there is the local specialty, deep fried spiders From this point on the traffic will thin out and we can cruise along at 90-100kmh till our next stop at Kompong Cham 120KM from Phnom Penh where we will stop for a bite to eat at around 10.30am.

By this point everybody should be comfortable with their bike and getting used to Asian traffic so from here on in, the pace picks up and the stops are fewer and shorter.

So 140km more tarmac before hitting the dirt for the final 120km run into Mondulkiri arriving just on sunset. Here the accommodation is rather basic ( no TV's, limited electricity ), although nice and clean, bucket showers (cold) sit-down toilets, and super thick blankets as it gets real cold at night, so no fans or aircon are needed nor provided.

Day 2

7.00-7.30 breakfast before leaving we will refuel and load up on water From here we start to hit the trails, hard-packed trails and rocky which will lead us to the goldmining town of Memung, around 4 hours after our departure from Mondulkiri. Here we will arrange lunch, so while they are out catching and killing our chickens we will tour the mines and if possible will arrange for a few riders to take a safe ( ???? ) journey 200 meters down under ground riding a 44 gallon drum.

Late afternoon and after refuelling the bikes and our water bottles we will ride out heading south on deep sandy trails, hopefully we can squeeze in 3 hours of riding till the sun goes down. We will then try to find a sandy section with good tree cover ( so its cool when we wake up ) and lots of fire wood for a big bonfire before dinner.

Day 3

A day of sand. OK soon as we wake up its coffee, cheese and bread for breakfast around the fire before packing up and riding 3 hours of deep sand till we reach our second breakfast stop ( could also be considered lunch ) where we will refuel ( water and petrol ) throw down a few cokes, noodles, bananas and what ever else we can find. We now continue heading north to rattanikiri on sandy trails till 45km outside our final destination where we will have to put the bikes on canoes tied together to get across the 100m wide river before us ,also a good spot for a swim . refreshed and remounted we will be on the home stretch a easy 45km ride into town on graded flat dirt roads.Timed perfectly we should arrive at our hotel just on sunset ready for a few too many beers.

We will be staying in the largest hotel in Ratanikiri ,however some rooms will have air cons, and some wont, however don't worry about missing out as they are usually broken or there is not enough power to run them. However, all rooms have showers and sit down toilets.

Day 4

Servicing of bikes to be done by local mechanic ( air filters, oil change ,adjust chain ++ )early morning or on the proceeding night if possible. Day of rest for those that need it or want it . There is a fantastic volcanic lake 4 km`s from town ,crystal clear water, drinking quality ,beer and snacks available and swimming deck built out over it.so swim and drink the day away.

For those who want to go exploring we will either go check out the Laos border and the secrete forest full of totem poles built to honour the dead of the local hilltribes. Or we will ride out to one of the gem mines where thousands live out in the jungle digging looking for gems. Upon our return we will drop into the hotel and change or just grab a towel before taking a quick trip out to the volcanic lake for a wash before dinner.

Day 5

Late start ,easy day ,late breakfast morning swim at the lake before heading south 120km to our luxury hotel in the town of Stung Treng, however the first 60km of road has corrugations to rattle out your fillings, fast or slow it makes no difference . Ok afternoon sunset beers on the riverbank of the Mekong river upon our arrival ,then check into our luxury hotel, Air con, sat TV , hot water and massages are available. Dinner will be a fine affair as it will be the last real meal for a while.

Day 6

Back on the road Ok early breakfast , be packed and ready to go at 7am (.refuel fuel and water ) we will then head down to the local port and have a sit down breakfast of eggs, noodles bread and cheese whilst waiting for our boats ( 4 or 5 boats ) that will take us on a 5 hour ride up the Mekong river till we hit the Laos border .depending on the time of our arrival and the groups decision , we will either sleep at the local wat ( Buddhist buildings where the monks live ) for the night or get a few hours riding in before selecting a spot to camp out for the night.

Day 7

The unknown / Voting day

The unknown is always interesting, and as we have done for the last few years , we will again try to find a new route.

Day 7 Will see us trying to find a route to Preah vihear if possible, should we have no luck in finding the route ( these are not major routes and can be hard to find or easily missed ) and there is usually nobody out this way to ask so its hard to find the right ox cart trail/ track . Cant tell you more than that other than it could be a very long day out, last time saw us riding till 10pm. Although I am not really interested in doing that again, but anything could happen . Worst case it will mean another night out under the stars. Again as its hard to predict what will happen , we will re evaluate our plans on a hourly basis, everything will be explained on the options available ,and will depend on where we are, the time, the terrain etc. Then the group will decide on which direction the rally will take.

Day 8

Relief and AIR CON

No matter what happens on days 7 & 8, the final last few hours of day 9 will be spent riding at 80-100kmh on flat dirt roads until we will be reach the outer areas of Siem Reap, then a final 5km of slow city riding to our hotel by late afternoon. Which means real first class meals, nice hotels with hot showers, air-cons, sat TV, internet, more food, cold beers and massages then more beer, night clubs and bars.

Day 9

Rest day. Day 9 will see the bikes getting a look over ( cost will be around $10 for a oil change and cleaning of the air filters ) The best way to check out the temples around Siem Reap is either by local taxi ( $20 air con Toyota Cammeray fits 4/5 people ) or local motor bike taxi. Entry ticket to the temples is $25 per day or $45 for a 3 day pass should you decide to end the rally in Siem Reap. You will also be able to jump on the internet, call home ,get some washing done, catch up on some sleep or get a relaxing massage. Riders Dinner followed by a visit to a local night club to check out some Khmer dancing.

Day 10

Easy day. Late breakfast ,late check out from hotel ,should be on the road by 10.30- 11.00am we will head east to sisophon 120km out, road starts of as nice flat tarmac and then goes down hill, back to dirt road, however, by January they might have run the grader over the dirt section.

At sisophon we will stop for a quick drink and refuel before getting back on the road and travelling another 100km on new tar roads to Battambung where we will stop for a late lunch . After lunch and refuelling we travel 100km and head to the former strong hold of the Khmer Rouge, the border town of Palin. we should arrive just on sunset and we will stay over night in a good hotel , air con, TV, no hot water though.

Day 11

Back in the Jungle / tiger territories / the best part. Early start,6.30- 7.00. Breakfast and heading out of town by 7.30, we travel back 45km on the same road we arrived on then turn off and start our crossing of the Cardamom Mountains. We will stay over night in a national park guest house. If we arrive early enough we will go and check out the local crocodiles.

Day 12

Return to Phnom Penh/ Early start and possibly the most technical part of the rally, lots of steep hills, deep rutted trails, 20cm wide in some places, log bridges etc. By lunch, however, we should have arrived in the Koh Kong, located down on the coast, which is also the border crossing to Thailand. After a full sit down lunch of crabs, prawn, we will start our return to Phnom Penh. From here back its all flat roads, first part graded dirt road with four river crossing to be made, after that we are back on smooth black-top for the final 120km run back into town, arrive at around 7pm.

  • Night 8 Luxury hotel
  • night 9 luxury hotel
  • Night 10 nice hotel

NO HAVE, NO RIDE

Camel Bak or hydration pack of some sort. Real Motorcycle boots at the least, preferably stiff motocross boots. Helmet. Gloves. Suitably large enough back pack to carry your gear plus 2 extra water bottles that will be purchased in villages along the way.

If you want to wear body armour and elbow pads that is up to you, although it dose get hot riding during the day. Most riders usually wear a motocross jersey, knee pads, riding pants, and obviously the required boots, helmets and gloves.

Do NOT bring one of those mesh jackets with built in body armour, you will die of heat exhaustion.

If you want to wear body armour get the plastic roost deflectors as they have good air flow and don't trap the heat in.

Keep in mind that all your expenses are covered for the first 5 days, after this you will be paying your own way,so budget on $70 USD a day.Obviously some days will cost much less than this, although fine dining, drinking ,temple visits and a nice hotel in siem Reap will balance this out, and of course there is the boat trip up the Mekong that might cost us a fair bit.
